Checklist for making decisions fair

Making decisions likely to affect people in Oxfordshire? Remember to use this quick community impact checklist when making decisions.

Local Strategic Partnerships look to deliver improved outcomes for local people and in order to do this effectively, they need to consider how their decisions are going to impact on the community.

The questions below form a quick 'community impact checklist' and should form part of your partnership's process for making key decisions that are likely to affect local people. They will help your partnership to consider access, equality of opportunity and inclusion when deciding on things like:

Community impact checklist

Does this area of the partnership's work have the potential to cause a negative impact on any groups in the community? What evidence does the partnership have to decide on this?

Have there been any equality related recommendations in this area arising from, for example, internal/external audits or scrutiny reports? How have they been taken on board?

Is this area of the partnership's work likely to have a negative affect on our relations with certain groups in the community?

Has there been consultation with relevant community groups about this aspect of the partnership's work?

Has this area of the partnership's work missed opportunities to promote equality of opportunity, good community relations and positive attitudes?

What next?

We've worked through the checklist and identified a possible equalities issue - what next?

When working through the checklist, you may spot some possible gaps or issues that could have a negative impact on local people (particularly those most likely to suffer disadvantage/ barriers). If these gaps can't be justified, your partnership will need to take positive action to address them.

Work together to come up with some practical solutions. Looking through the hints and tips pages may give you some ideas. Some partner organisations may also have their own source of equalities expertise which you could possibly draw on if you need further advice. It may also be a good idea to talk to relevant communities to get their advice.
